Also known as THC, the main phytocannabinoid in the marijuana plant responsible for the “high,” the euphoric and psychoactive effects on the body. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the only known intoxicating phytocannabinoid that can alter behavior, consciousness, mood, appetite and perception. During THC intoxication, brain imaging studies have shown increased blood flow to the prefrontal cortex region of the brain, which is responsible for decision-making, attention, and other functions, like motor skills.
